One of the major issues that arose from the Nexus One being only sold on Google website was the Google’s customer service. Google were using an email system to gather and reply to support issues, which were simply not appropriate for phone usage or fast enough. Complaints began rising and Google have responded by releasing a phone line for support. A good step to improving their business model, which needed and still needs to be radically changed for the phone market.

By design, we focused initially on providing the best possible customer support through our on-line channel, and our experience in the four weeks since the Nexus One launch enabled us to significantly enhance that on-line support offering. We have been able to address a large majority of customers’ inquiries successfully through on-line support, in combination with phone support from our partners, HTC and T-Mobile. That said, our approach with our new consumer channel is to learn fast and continue to improve, and we have, therefore, also been developing our capabilities to provide a number from Google, 888-48-NEXUS (63987) for live phone support for the Nexus One. Live phone support from Google, combined with an optimized on-line support experience, enables a superior Nexus One customer experience.

As you may remember, Nexus Gossip reported the disappointing sales results for the Nexus One after their first week, this figure was said to be as little as 20,000, far bellow expectations. Today Flurry announced another blow for Google’s Nexus One, estimating only 80,000 sold in the first month.

Flurry tracks over 10,000 developer’s applications on the iPhone and Android platform. Based on the applications being used on new devices, Flurry can make an estimate of the number sold during that period.

As Nexus Gossip has mentioned in previous posts the reason for these low sales figures could be due to the low advertising budget Google has spent promoting the phone, compared to the likes of the iPhone. Another reason could be due to only selling through Google’s phone store alone, instead of in major stores.

Sat there waiting for Google to send you the notification saying you are finally able to download the new update? Well thanks to Android Forums you don’t have to! Just follow these simple steps and you can update manually!

1. Download the update from here (Google official) or here (mirror).
2. Rename the file to update.zip. Note that if you’re using Windows, just rename it to “update” (no quotes, of course) because it’s already a zipped file.
3. Copy the update.zip file onto your microSD card.
4. With your Nexus One off, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
5. You’ll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select “Bootloader.”
6. On the next screen, select “Recovery.”
7. Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
8. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.
9. Now (using the trackball this time) choose “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and let things run their course.

You may have seen our earlier post on how to make your Nexus One have Multi-Touch, well now you don’t need to as Google have done it for you! The new updates allows you to use Multi-Touch on your browser, gallery and on the Maps.

As well as this the 3G issue reported earlier by Nexus Gossip has been fixed which means connectivity via 3G should be back to normal.

What do I have to do to get the new Nexus One update?

Nothing… Google are sending the update out using pixies in the air. Okay maybe not pixies but it is an over the air download. According to Google (posted bellow) you should get a notification on your phone, if you click that the update will download. Unfortunately you may not see this until the end of the week, let us know when you get yours!

NEW: Don’t want to wait? You don’t have to!

“In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone’s notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.”

Yesterday, Walmart posted on their Coming soon page, a link to their sales page which included the information of the Nexus One. Everything looked normal, as if Walmart were to get the Nexus One, however, to keen eyed viewers the technical specifications were different to those listed on Google. Obviously this could have been a mistake until today when Walmart removed the product and posted.

Due to a technical error, this item erroneously was displayed on our site. We’re working with our partner Let’s Talk to have it removed as quickly as possible. We have no plans to carry Nexus One in Walmart stores or online at Walmart.com at this time. – Walmart spokesman Ravi Jariwala

Walmart did not release any prices or give any hints to a price so we are unsure what they aimed to sell it for if they were to sell it at all. Lets face it, they wouldn’t make a page to sell the Nexus One if they didn’t have ‘plans to carry Nexus One’

As found by Reuters it appears that Google sensor swear words during their speech to text technology. If a swear word slips it will be replaces with a string of # symbols. So why do they not allow it? Here is what a Google spokesperson had to say

“The “feature” is less about sanitizing users’ speech and more about making sure curse words don’t accidentally appear in transcriptions erroneously, a real possibility given the early and not always accurate state of voice recognition technology.”

“We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent,” the statement said.

I guess that makes sense.
